PEDIATRIC
DENTISTRY
1.
What is a Pediatric Dentist?
A Pediatric Dentist is an individual who truly enjoys
working with the developing child and his/her parents.
Two extra years of specialized training after fours
years of Dental School enable the Pediatric Dentist
to treat the technical, developmental, and psychological
needs of the young dental patient.
2.
At what age should my child see a Pediatric Dentist?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends
around age one to eighteen months for the first exam.
We see children at any age of course, between two and
three years is also a good time.
3.
What do you do on my child's first dental visit?
We usually "count the teeth" and perform a complete
oral exam. Many times we will clean the teeth, apply
a good tasting topical fluoride, and maybe even take
x-rays. What is accomplished for each child depends
on how easy the procedure is for the new "Little Helper".

4.
Why are primary "Baby Teeth" so important?
Primary teeth are important for chewing and development.
They provide space for the later erupting permanent
teeth. Attractive primary teeth can be esthetically
important to the child and his/her peers. Proper dental
care of primary teeth usually leads to sound dental
health for the permanent teeth.
5.
What should I do daily to properly care for my child's
teeth?
As soon as the first primary teeth erupt (usually around
six months of age) they should be cleaned with a gauze,
a soft cloth, or a soft toothbrush. Most children need
help brushing their teeth until age eight. A healthly
reminder to "Brush your Teeth" is not a bad
idea for kids of any age.
Nutrition
is important for overall health and specifically impacts
the teeth. A well balanced diet is essential for proper
growth and development. Frequent sugary snacks such
as apple juice, white grape juice, and soft drinks should
be limited at an early age. Common sense is often a
parents' best guide.

1.
When should my child see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends
that your child first visit the Orthodontist by the
age of 7 or earlier if a problem is noted. An early
examination determines when your child's particular
problem should be treated for maximum improvement. In
many patients early treatment achieves results that
are unattainable once the face and jaws have finished
growing. Also early intervention often makes the completion
of treatment at a later age easier and more time efficient.
2.
Why are straight teeth so important?
Straight teeth are easier to keep clean and clean teeth
are healthy teeth. Straight teeth are important for
proper chewing, biting, as well as proper speech. Straight
teeth also add to a child's positive self-image and
his/her success in life.

3.
How do I determine the best orthodontist for my child?
The best Orthodontist for your child is usually
the Orthodontist you family feels the most comfortable
with. Wearing braces is a team effort and success depends
on everyone doing their part, patient, Doctor, and parent.
Orthodontic treatment should be a rewarding experience
for almost everyone.
It
is a good idea to visit with your Orthodontist about
their training and treatment philosophy. We all want
to achieve that great smile and have a good time reaching
our goal!
